Asian Pastries from The Bakery at Fat Rice

The highlight of our weekend was eating delicious Asian pastries from The Bakery at Fat Rice in Chicago.

We spent our Sunday morning on a long walk to visit The Bakery at Fat Rice in Logan Square. This was K’s only request for Father’s Day – the man loves Asian pastries {and who am I to reject a pastry}. The Bakery at Fat Rice is the bakery attached to the popular Macanese restaurant Fat Rice, located on Diversey Avenue in Logan Square.

I ordered four pastries for us to share – two sweet and two savory. For savory, we tried the Breakfast Cremoso {corn custard, bacon and scallion} and Chicago-style Hot Dog Bun {with Vienna beef and classic toppings}. For sweet, we tried the Pastel de Nata {Egg Tart} and Malasada {sweet donut with mango cream filling}.

I also ordered a Salted “Vietnamese Iced” Coffee, which is made with evaporated milk and homemade caramel with fish sauce {the ‘salted’ portion}. Fish sauce in your coffee might sound strange but I promise it’s delicious. If you’re a coffee lover, please visit The Bakery ASAP and order one. K ordered a peanut milk on ice, which had me dreaming about peanut butter lattes. I have never seen peanut milk for sale before but now I’m on a hunt for it.

The Bakery at Fat Rice features unique pastries inspired by “Macau, Portugal and beyond.” All of the pastries we tried were great but we especially loved the sweet options. The egg custard was light and just a little bit sweet. Our toddler loved this one too, in particular the custard filling. By far our favorite pastry was most traditional “donut”, the Malasada. This pastry was filled with a tart, mango cream. The texture reminded me of lemon cream pie. It was by far the best pastry I’ve ever had and worth every step of our sweaty Sunday walk on an 85+ degree morning.

As I mentioned, The Bakery also has an amazing drinks menu inspired by Malaysia. I need to go back soon to try the Double Duck and Stegosaurus coffee drinks.
